С установлением реалистического метода в литературе в середине XIX века внимание писателей с грамматически выверенного и благозвучного авторского слова стало смещаться на социально детерминированную речь. В статье на материале рассказа Н.В. Успенского «Хорошее житье» анализируются особенности речи простых людей, исследуются состав и объем лексического просторечия в их дискурсе. Определяется семантика просторечия (как формы существования языка) применительно к середине и второй половине века. Проведенный анализ позволяет заключить, что просторечие для персонажей является единственно возможным способом речевого общения, усвоенным с детства и коммуникативно успешным в разных ситуациях. Просторечие коннотативно передает информацию о социальном статусе говорящих, их образовании, территориальной принадлежности. В статье представлен состав лексического просторечия на основе классификации лексики в «Русском семантическом словаре» под общей редакцией Н.Ю. Шведовой. В качестве лексикографических источников были использованы словари середины и второй половины XIX века: «Словарь церковнославянского и русского языка, составленный вторым отделением Императорской Академии наук» (1847) и «Толковый словарь живого великорусского языка» В.И. Даля (1863–1866). В рассказе Н.В. Успенского персонажи – крестьяне, и спектр тем, поднимаемых в диалогах, полилогах, монологах, характер рассуждений и манера общения дают наглядное представление о том, из чего складывается жизнь и быт крестьянства. Точка зрения целовальника, для которого выгодно спаивать деревенских жителей, искажает облик русского крестьянина. По отношению к крестьянину название рассказа «Хорошее житье» звучит как горькая усмешка.
With the formation of the realistic method in literature in the mid–19th century writers began to shift their focus from grammatically correct and melodious authorial language to socially determined speech. In this article based on N. Uspensky's short story "A Good Life" we analyze the characteristics of ordinary people's speech and explore the composition and scope of lexical vernacular/vulgar in their discourse. We also examine the semantics of vernacular (as a form of language) in relation to the mid–19th and late 19th century. The analysis makes it possible to conclude that vernacular words seem to be the only possible way of communication for the characters, which they have learned since childhood and which is successful in various situations. Colloquial speech conveys information about the social status, education, and territorial affiliation of the speakers. The article presents the composition of lexical vernacular/vulgar speech based on the classification of vocabulary in the Russian Semantic Dictionary, edited by N. Shvedova. Dictionaries of the middle and second half of the 19th century were used as lexicographic sources of information on stylistic characteristics: The Dictionary of Church Slavonic and Russian compiled by the Second Department of the Imperial Academy of Sciences (1847) and the Explanatory Dictionary of the Living Great Russian Language by V. Dahl (1863–1866). The characters of N. Uspensky's story are peasants, and the range of topics discussed in the dialogues, polylogues, and monologues, as well as the nature of the reasoning and communication style provide a clear understanding of the life and daily routines of the peasantry. Point of view of the tallow–maker, who benefits from getting the villagers drunk, distorts the image of the Russian peasant. In relation to the peasant the title of the story "A Good Life" carries a bitter undertone.
